Voices from the Rif on Cannabis
Introduction
Hello everyone. Welcome to our space where today, we dive into the stories and lives of people in the Rif of Morocco, a region rich in culture and tradition, particularly around cannabis. Join me on this fascinating journey where we explore voices that are rarely heard, yet full of wisdom and resilience.
A Special Encounter

In May of this year, I had the privilege of meeting Pean in Morocco, one of the most knowledgeable people I have encountered on the topic of cannabis. Her deep knowledge and kind spirit were evident from our first meeting at a conference in Marrakech. Along with Blanca Diego, a prominent journalist from Spain, we have worked on an audiovisual project that we are pleased to share with you today.
"It is an absolute pleasure to welcome Pean to our podcast live today and have a conversation with her."

## Introduction to the Podcast
For our listeners, due to the complexity of the topic we will address, we will begin with an audiovisual piece at the start of the show. This will help clarify many questions and will frame the context of our discussion. The history of cannabis in Morocco is rich and multifaceted, and our goal is to present an authentic picture of what is happening on the ground.
The History of Cannabis in the Rif
Voices from the Rif

Over time, cannabis has been an integral part of the Rif of Morocco. Its traditional cultivation, a practice that has withstood the test of time, recently found a new direction with regulation in 2021. The report explores the history of resistance of the Amazigh people and their struggle to maintain the cultivation of cannabis, an indigenous plant, banned and tolerated over the centuries.
"A people, an ancestral plant, a billion-dollar trade."

Innovations in Construction
With the emergence of new practices, the use of hemp for construction has gained popularity. Mónica Bruma, an architect expert in its use, has designed the Zero Kilometer House, a dwelling that symbolizes a return to the natural and sustainable, integrating local elements such as beldiya, the cannabis native to the Central High Rif.
The Evolution of Cultivation
The inhabitants of the Rif have witnessed drastic changes in their relationship with cannabis. From ritual and medicinal use to being a production center for illegal hashish trade, the story is complex. In recent decades, modified seeds have presented new challenges, from the depletion of water resources to severe ecological impacts.
Current Challenges
Criminalization has been a constant shadow for Rif farmers. However, recent regulation offers new hope, though it comes with its own challenges in implementation and international acceptance.

International Collaboration
Through international collaboration, the aim is to give visibility and elevate the voices of farmers on the global stage. Organizations like the Transnational Institute work to bring issues of human rights, indigenous rights, and environmental justice to the forefront.
Final Reflections
The journey towards fair and equitable regulation of cannabis in Morocco is underway. As we explore these stories, it is crucial to continue supporting and listening to those who have been at the heart of this tradition for generations.
"This is a region of Morocco that has been forgotten for most of its modern history."
